Furthur Bus Ends their 50th Anniversary Tour in San Francisco at Jammin on Haight.
The Furthur Bus pulled up to Jammin on Haight. The colors of the bus blended into the shop like a rainbow blends into a dewy sunrise.
One by one the Pranksters stepped off the bus (or climbed off the roof) each had on a colorful outfit with their own style and swagger.
It seems to me that this is where the Furthur Bus should be all the time…on the corner where the epicenter of the counter culture movement began.
For two days all those that passed stared in amazement at the bus, some knew right away what is was and ran over…others sauntered…intrigued…yet cautious…I mean how often do you see a rainbow painted bus with a bunch of colorful/sparkly people milling around it.
But how could you not walk over, how could you not check out the bus…it was kinda like you were drawn to it like a moth to the light.
I had the privilege of riding the bus both nights as it left Haight Street to go to the venues for the evening. The First night we headed down lower Haight waving to everyone that we passed. The second night we headed from the shop towards Stanyon Street. As we turned onto Haight from Masonic someone yelled “You are taking Haight Street Back!”
As we rode down the street people stopped and cheered, waved and clapped.
It was a fitting way to have the Furthur bus leave Haight Street…I just wish it could stay.
